Gásadalur
tucked away between lush green fields and soaring mountains to all sides
The village of Gásadalur, surrounded by the highest mountains on Vágar, enjoys a panoramic view over the isle of Mykines.
Until recently, the village of Gásadalur was the only village on the Faroe Islands without a road connection to other villages. Until then, the path over the mountain was the only connection to the outside world. The postman carried the post over the mountain three times a week. In 2004, the Faroese Parliament built a tunnel to Gásadalur, which ended the isolation. However, the cosy atmosphere of the village is still intact.
WHAT TO EXPERIENCE IN GÁSADALUR
Whether you choose to hike the old post route or drive through the newly built tunnel, the village is an extraordinary and unique place to visit. It was characterized by its isolation until recently—an undiscovered place yet full of magic.
In Gásadalur, you will find Múlafossur, one of the prettiest waterfalls in the world. The waterfall just falls off the cliffs, making it one of the most spectacular views in the Faroe Islands.
Above the village is the highest mountain of Vágar Island, called Árnafjall.
In the village, there is also a café and venue called Gásadalsgarður. Here, you can enjoy a carefully selected menu of food and beverages. The cafe serves local Faroese food and is as authentic as it gets.
Regarding accommodation opportunities, a small guesthouse is in the middle of the village. The small but cosy and comfortable new guesthouse has four rooms called Hjallrímsstova.
A small souvenir shop, Uanni, is also located in Gásadalur. It is run by a local couple who take great pride in what they stock. This includes sheepskin, hand-knitted sweaters made by the owner herself, and various other interesting items.
Gásadalur is a “must-see” for all tourists because of its unspoiled nature and lack of influence from the present.
HOW TO GET TO GÁSADALUR
Gásadalur is located on the island of Vágar. It takes approximately 15 minutes to drive from Vágar Airport to Gásadalur.
From Vágar airport, head west on Route 22 towards the village of Sørvágur. In Sørvágur, you will see signs towards the villages of Bøur and Gásadalur. Follow route 45 towards Gásadalur. The road leading to Gásadalur is good. Before reaching the village, you will need to drive through a mountain tunnel, which was built in 2004. Please read our driving guidelines before taking to the road.
If you want to reach Gásadalur by public transport, take bus route 300 from either Tórshavn (capital) or Vágar Airport. To see a complete bus timetable, visit SSL's website.
